Slappin’ the Bass! Great basslines in Dance: Tom Tom Club/Genius of Love

A regular feature that will spotlight some of the all time classic basslines from club and dance records. Kicking it off with one of my favorites and not one that is immediately obvious.

That’s because it has many other very catchy and distinctive elements, such as that smokin rhythm guitar, that slammin’ Linn Drum beat (or was it DMX?), and that plucked synth riff that is just oh so Electro!

But listen out for how the bassline pulses and throbs throughout, teasing and taunting, smooth like buttah! And yes, we are still talking about the bass. It’s also a great reminder that sometimes, the best electro comes courtesy of the good old 4 string!

The track is Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club! Yes, clearly genius. Sampled most famously for the Mariah Carey-Cannon (my hyphenation) track Fantasy. Go on girl!
